SELF-DEVELOPMENT AND RATIONAL THINKING: HOW CAN ONE IMPROVE THEIR LIFE BY IMPLEMENTING THE PHILOSOPHY OF OBJECTIVISM?

In today’s world, we are overwhelmed with waves of easy tips for self-improvement. These quick fixes do not offer permanent solutions. Becoming a better version of oneself and thereby enhancing one’s own life demands substantial commitment. When one considers changing oneself, there are a great number of ways to do so.

Philosophy is definitely a good starting point, and Objectivism, as a philosophical school that values individualism and rational self-interest, certainly can be a good base. It confronts the individual with reality and sets an ideal to strive for.

The American philosopher and author Ayn Rand developed this philosophical approach, rooted in individualism, reason, and the pursuit of happiness. It emphasizes rational thinking, personal responsibility, and the pursuit of one’s values. By embracing these principles, individuals can overcome obstacles, discover their unique strengths, and create a life guided by reason and driven by purpose.

As emphasized, this philosophy system is applicable in everyday life, as well as personal development. How so? Objectivism highlights individualism – urging individuals to exercise independent thinking and pursue their unique aspirations and principles. This aspect matches well with self-improvement by encouraging people to discover and accept who they really are. Furthermore, the philosophy of Objectivism argues that we should primarily use reason and logic to understand reality better. When we use reason in personal growth, we think critically, reflect on ourselves, and make choices based on facts and reasonable thinking.

Personal responsibility is a really important aspect of Objectivism as a condition for living a fulfilling and moral life. Individuals are responsible for their own actions, choices, and the consequences of those choices. This perspective is rooted in the belief that each person has the capacity for rational thought and can, therefore, make informed decisions about their own life.

Identification and pursuit of one’s own values are important, beneficial, and desirable. In Objectivism, these values are reflected in reason, purpose, and self-esteem, and their corresponding virtues are rationality, productiveness, and pride. These (personal) values are crucial because they are seen as necessary for individual happiness and well-being. It is a moral imperative – people have a fundamental right to their own life, and the pursuit of their values and rights should be respected by others.

Now, students and all those interested in these subjects can apply for the John Galt School in India via the link until 23rd of March. At John Galt School, we are committed to fostering an environment that nurtures the development of independent thinkers and future leaders. Our curriculum is designed to empower students with the tools and insights necessary to thrive in a complex world while staying true to their individual aspirations.

Through various workshops, lectures, and debates, participants at John Galt School will not only explore the impact of Objectivism on their personal lives but also learn how this philosophy reflects on society, the political system, and art. As alumni, they will have various opportunities – scholarships, attendance at international conferences, etc.

John Galt School in India is organized by the Ayn Rand Center Europe in collaboration with Students for Liberty India and is funded by the generous support of the Prometheus Foundation. In the past year alone, the program was implemented in 30 countries, with 737 graduates.

Ayn Rand Center Europe is a nonprofit organization founded in 2016, originally known as the Balkan Objectivist Center. Their main programs include the John Galt School and the annual NICON – New Intellectuals Conference. By expanding their influence and activities, they quickly earned and adopted a new name and became the hub of European Objectivism – Ayn Rand Center Europe. This transformation allowed them to meet the needs of a larger market, all thanks to the successes they achieved, partners who shared the same vision, and a cooperative team that has grown year by year.

Tips to help kids keep safe during summer

Children look forward to the summer months, when a break from school gives them a chance to enjoy the outdoors, travel and relax with friends and family. As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, summer brings a wealth of opportunities for children to explore, play, and create lasting memories.

However, amidst the excitement of outdoor adventures and long days of fun, it’s important to ensure that children have a safe and enjoyable summer. Here are some essential tips to keep kids safe during summer:

Protect kids’ skin:

Before heading outdoors, ensure that children are protected from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Limit exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and encourage children to play in shaded areas whenever possible. Dress children in lightweight, breathable clothing that covers exposed skin. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses offer additional protection for the face and eyes.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate:

Encourage kids to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during outdoor activities and hot weather. Avoid sugary drinks and caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration. Teach children to recognize signs of dehydration, including thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and dark-colored urine. Remind them to drink water regularly, even if they don’t feel thirsty.

Practice water safety:

Never leave children unattended near water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or ocean. Designate a responsible adult to actively supervise children while they swim or play in or around water. Enroll children in age-appropriate swimming lessons to teach them essential water safety skills, such as floating, treading water, and basic strokes. Ensure that children wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or participating in water sports, even if they know how to swim. Life jackets provide an added layer of protection, especially in unpredictable water conditions.

Don’t overdo it on the outdoors:

Kids of all ages should take breaks from playing outside by retreating into the shade, every 20 minutes to 30 minutes. Teach children about the dangers of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Encourage them to take frequent breaks in the shade, drink water, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Maintain healthy eating habits:

Incorporate a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables into their meals and snacks. Fresh produce is abundant during the summer months and provides essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Choose whole grain options for bread, pasta, and cereals to provide sustained energy and fiber. Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread are nutritious choices. Reduce consumption of sugary beverages like sodas, fruit juices, and sweetened teas.

Prevent playground mishaps:

Before allowing children to play on playground equipment, inspect it for any signs of damage or hazards, such as sharp edges, loose bolts, or splinters. Keep a close eye on children while they play on playgrounds to ensure their safety. Encourage them to use equipment properly and discourage risky behaviours.

Road Safety:

Whether biking, skateboarding, or riding scooters, always ensure that children wear properly fitting helmets to protect against head injuries. Teach children to obey traffic rules, use crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing the street. Set a good example by following these rules yourself.

Enjoy your summer!

Summer is a time for children to embrace the joys of outdoor play and exploration, but it’s important to prioritize their safety above all else. By following these safety precautions, parents can help ensure that children have a summer filled with fun, laughter, and cherished memories while staying safe and healthy.

Clean water for all: How SEEDS India’s community projects are making a difference

As the world commemorates World Water Day 2024 with the theme “Water for Peace”, the focus is once again on the critical issue of water accessibility and sustainability. In India, a nation with a staggering population of over 1.3 billion, the challenge of ensuring clean water for all is particularly acute.

However, the narrative is not just about challenges, it’s also about the remarkable strides made by community-driven projects across India, showcasing resilience, innovation, and the spirit of collective action.

The Magnitude of India’s Water Crisis

Recent statistics paint a concerning picture: nearly 600 million Indians are grappling with high to extreme water stress. Natural disasters in India, such as floods, cyclones, and earthquakes, often lead to significant disruptions in water supply systems, resulting in acute shortages of clean water. These calamities damage infrastructure and contaminate water sources with pollutants and disease-causing pathogens. The resultant lack of clean water poses severe health risks, particularly in densely populated areas. Moreover, the situation exacerbates the plight of vulnerable communities who struggle to access safe drinking water.

This crisis is compounded by rapidly depleting groundwater resources and widespread water contamination issues. On World Water Day 2024, these figures not only highlight the gravity of the situation but also serve as a call to action for sustainable solutions.

SEEDS’ Holistic Approach to Water Security and Disaster Resilience

This World Water Day, attention turns towards the remarkable efforts of organizations like SEEDS India, whose community projects are making tangible differences in the lives of many. Through innovative approaches and deep community involvement, SEEDS is not just offering temporary relief but is fostering long-term resilience and self-sufficiency.

The country’s susceptibility to a range of natural hazards, compounded by the impacts of climate change, has made disaster resilience and preparedness a paramount concern. Unplanned development and inadequate disaster preparedness amplify devastation, often leading to loss of lives, livelihoods, and forced migration. In response, SEEDS’ comprehensive approach in disaster-affected and at-risk communities is noteworthy. Their focus spans safe housing, schools, community infrastructure, water and sanitation, environment, and health, all grounded in sustainable, ecosystem-based approaches.

The story of SEEDS’ intervention in Assam, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 floods, is a testament to their impactful work. The floods that ravaged the Cachar district were a harsh reminder of nature’s unpredictable fury. SEEDS’ Project Ashraya India Flood Relief, in collaboration with the Cachar district administration, has been at the forefront of rebuilding lives in this hard-hit region. Their response combined immediate relief with strategic long-term recovery efforts.

                                TerraFilter, Cachar, Assam

A notable achievement of this project is the installation of 10 Terra filters, which exemplify SEEDS’ innovative approach to providing clean water. Terra filters, developed by CSIR-IMMT, are low-cost, efficient devices for filtering water, particularly effective in areas with high sediment, iron content, and microbial contamination. With the capability to treat water with high turbidity and iron content, these filters are a boon for communities in Cachar, where such conditions are prevalent. The simplicity and efficiency of Terra filters, requiring minimal training for production and maintenance, make them an ideal solution for resource-constrained settings.

Dr. Manu Gupta, the Director of SEEDS says, “The North-Eastern part of India is an identified climate hot spot. The increased number of climate incidents and the intensity are clearly affecting lives and livelihoods. The SEEDS team has a decade-long presence in the State and has strategically worked over the past two years to ensure that the building of schools and primary health centres is powered to incorporate community resilience as well.”

The Assam Story

In the flood-affected Cachar district, the DRDO’s Terra Filters emerged as a beacon of hope, offering clean water to areas where floods often lingered for weeks. Local residents like Manika Das greeted the filters with hope but also a wish for more, given the large number of people in need. In places like Mahadevpura and Khelma gram panchayat, these filters promised relief from the frequent muddy drinking water. The community’s involvement, particularly in Mahadevpur, highlighted their collective effort and anticipation for improved living conditions. SEEDS, instrumental in this initiative, installed filters in strategic locations, embodying a commitment to build a resilient community prepared for future challenges, turning a simple solution into a symbol of enduring hope.

Conclusion

In essence, SEEDS’ work in India, epitomized by projects like in Assam, is a testament to the power of community-driven, sustainable approaches in tackling the challenges of disaster resilience and water security. As the world observes World Water Day 2024, SEEDS stands out as an exemplar of how targeted, innovative, and inclusive efforts can make a tangible difference in ensuring clean water for all, fostering resilience, and shaping a more sustainable future. Their endeavors in India are not just a beacon of hope for those directly impacted but also a blueprint for similar initiatives worldwide.

Embracing the Power of English: Empowering Students in the classroom

In today’s interconnected world, proficiency in English is increasingly vital for success in both academic and professional endeavours. However, mastering spoken English can be challenging for non-native speakers.

If you’re a teacher, the chances are that – like many other school staff – your students may say all the words and phrases in the world, but they still struggle with spoken English. Here are some practical tips to support students in improving their spoken English in schools:

Create a Supportive Environment

Establish a classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable practicing English without fear of judgment. Encourage a culture of mutual respect and patience among peers. Create opportunities for collaborative learning and group discussions that cater to different learning styles and interests. These may include role-plays, debates, presentations, storytelling, or even casual conversations on topics of interest.

Emphasize Active Listening

Effective communication involves not only speaking but also listening attentively. Encourage students to actively listen to English speakers, whether it’s through podcasts, videos, or real-life interactions. Provide activities that require students to summarize, paraphrase, or respond to what they’ve heard, thus reinforcing comprehension skills alongside speaking practice.

Focus on Pronunciation and Intonation

Help students improve their pronunciation by breaking down difficult sounds and practicing them repeatedly. Use tongue twisters, phonetic exercises, and pronunciation drills to enhance articulation. Pay attention to intonation and stress patterns in sentences, as they greatly influence the clarity and naturalness of speech.

Incorporate Real-Life Contexts

Integrate authentic materials such as newspapers, magazines, TV shows, and movies into lessons to expose students to real-life English usage. Discuss current events, cultural practices, and societal issues to broaden students’ vocabulary and understanding of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms.

Use Games & Interactive Activities

Games are a fun way to work on speaking skills in the classroom, and there’s no better way to practice speaking than with another person! Games have been proven as one of the most effective tools for developing spoken English. Consider creating a game or a series of games for your students, where everyone can join in and win points by correctly picking words out of their own knowledge base and the other person’s.

Utilize Technology and Multimedia Resources

Take advantage of technology tools and multimedia resources to supplement classroom instruction. Use language learning apps, online speech recognition software, and interactive websites designed to enhance speaking skills. Virtual reality simulations and language exchange platforms can also provide immersive language practice opportunities.

Finally, language acquisition is a journey, and every step forward is a significant achievement towards fluency and cultural competence. While there is no silver bullet to helping people improve their spoken English skills, there are things you can do to help them break through their mental blocks and succeed at speaking more fluently than ever before.

By embracing the power of English, we can bridge language gaps, unlock academic achievements, and foster cultural competence. By employing these strategies and fostering a positive attitude towards language learning, educators can empower students to become confident and proficient English speakers.

The Importance of Ventilation in School and College: Enhancing Air Quality for Healthier Learning Environments

The importance of indoor air quality in influencing the learning environment in modern educational institutions grows as these institutions upgrade and enhance their standards to provide a comfortable environment for both staff and students. Students’ and employees’ health, happiness, and academic achievement can all be strongly impacted by the quality of the air they breathe. Inadequate ventilation systems in educational institutions can have a variety of negative health effects, from respiratory problems to cognitive disorders that impair productivity and learning.

Mr. Rajesh Sachdev, CEO, Blutherm

The quality of the air we breathe becomes increasingly important to us as air pollution increases. It is crucial for students and staff to breathe clean air in educational facilities since inadequate ventilation and poor air quality impair their capacity to think clearly and learn.

Students can learn in a more hygienic atmosphere thanks to good indoor air quality, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and germs in the air.

Mold and fungus, as well as particulate matter and CO2 levels, can all rise in a classroom with poor air quality. All of this degrades the comfort of the staff and kids by making the classroom seem humid and moist. Because of this pain, the faculty and students are less focused, which hinders their ability to study. In addition, the increase in CO2 makes kids feel sleepy, which leads to a lot of them nodding off in class.

Activities in modern schools include cooking, cleaning, science projects, art, indoor games, etc.  All of these activities release VOCs and CO2 into the air, which, if the room isn’t adequately aired, can make it seem stuffy and damp.

In order to protect staff and students’ health from potential harm, adequate ventilation systems must be implemented in conjunction with multiple concurrent activities.

The effects of poor ventilation on health are severe. Most of us tend to disregard it since the impacts of continuous exposure to inadequate ventilation might manifest very slowly. Ventilation is thus referred to as the ignored element.

Respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, blocked nose, bacterial infections, etc. can be brought on by exposure to inadequate ventilation. Asthma may also result from these long-term impacts, despite the fact that they appear normal.

Impaired cognitive function is another consequence of being exposed to inadequate ventilation. Indoor air pollution can lower productivity, impair cognitive function, and lower levels of concentration. All of this is crucial for a student’s academic achievement.

Educational institutions can considerably benefit from investing in good ventilation systems that enhance indoor air quality by creating an environment that is optimal for staff and student performance.

Mold, fungi, VOCs, particulate matter, CO2, and other contaminants are all decreased in an area with good indoor air quality. Because healthy air improves cognitive function and lowers the risk of respiratory ailments, it makes the environment ideal for learning for students.

Our government places a high priority on indoor quality due to the rising levels of air pollution. There are specific ventilation requirements that educational institutions must follow in order to create a comfortable indoor atmosphere. Additionally, as time passes, an increasing number of educational institutions are giving good ventilation techniques top priority.

There are various ways an educational institution can implement ventilation:

Supply ventilation: This kind of ventilation creates positive pressure by introducing new, filtered air into the area. Here, it is assumed that air will circulate via door undercuts and gaps. Filtered fresh air fans and treated fresh air systems are a few instances of supply ventilation.

Extract Ventilation: The complete opposite of supply ventilation is known as extract ventilation. Using a mechanical method, negative pressure is created in the room, and louvres are installed on doors and windows to allow positive air to be drawn to the generated negative pressure and create air circulation. This technique creates negative pressure by means of exhaust systems.

Balanced Ventilation with Energy Recovery: This kind of ventilation creates a balanced environment by simultaneously mechanically bringing in fresh air and drawing out an equal amount of stale air. This system lessens the strain on air conditioning systems by recovering and transferring the energy from the indoor air to the air that is being supplied. This technique produces the ideal atmosphere in a space, especially with modern structures getting increasingly air tight.

Improvements to school facilities’ ventilation systems have long-term positive effects on academic performance in addition to improving the health and wellbeing of personnel and students. Better concentration, productivity, and general performance can result from improved air quality, making it an investment that pays for itself over time.

In conclusion, giving ventilation systems top priority at educational institutions is an essential investment in the health, happiness, and academic performance of both staff and students as well as a way to ensure compliance with rules. Schools and universities can make learning environments safer, healthier, and more productive for everyone by realizing the impact indoor air quality has on them and putting effective policies into place to improve ventilation systems. It is imperative to underscore the significance of preserving ideal air quality in educational facilities in order to cultivate an environment that is favorable for instruction, learning, and general health.
