More than 10,000 individuals, ranging from septuagenarians to jail inmates, received their degrees, diplomas, and PhDs during the convocation held at Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) in Guwahati on Tuesday, 5th of March, 2024. The sixth convocation of the university saw the awarding of a total of 10,880 degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Notable attendees included Assam Governor and Chancellor Gulab Chand Kataria, as well as Professor Sushma Yadava, the pro vice-chancellor of Central University of Haryana. Among the recipients were 13 individuals who were conferred with PhDs.
Nearly half of the awardees were female learners, and 28 individuals were honored with gold medals for their outstanding academic achievements.
Among the degree recipients were Chandra Prabha Mahanta, a 75-year-old woman who graduated, and Mahendra Bhuyan, a 72-year-old who obtained his postgraduate degree, both being the two oldest learners.
A total of seven inmates from different state jails successfully completed their academic programs at the university. One of them, at Guwahati Central Jail, was present in person to attend the convocation in person to receive his degree.
During the event, Kataria appreciated KKHSOU for its efforts in making higher education more accessible in the state. He highlighted that KKHSOU accounts for approximately 11 percent of the total enrollment in higher education in Assam.
The governor also commended the university for providing education to a significant portion of the female population in the state, thereby upholding its motto of ‘Education Beyond Barriers.’
During the event, Professor Yadava, the chief guest, praised the university’s efforts in implementing the National Education Policy 2020 starting from the academic session of July 2023. In her speech, she underscored the significance of integrating the Indian knowledge system into the university’s course curriculum.
Highlighting the importance of open and distance learning, she pointed out that this educational approach has effectively eliminated barriers related to resources, position, and costs.
