AICTE to Integrate AI into Engineering Curriculum for Enhanced Learning and Innovation

In an effort to enhance the value of core engineering branches and align them with the evolving technological landscape, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is planning to revise engineering curricula by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI). This updated curriculum will feature AI as an interdisciplinary module, focusing on its applications across various domains while emphasizing ethical considerations and fostering innovative practices.

To prepare students for the future workforce, AICTE has designated 2025 as the "Year of AI." Prof. TG Sitharam, Chairman of AICTE, explained, “We plan to integrate AI into the curricula of core engineering disciplines as interdisciplinary modules. The process has already begun with the inclusion of AI elements in the newly launched undergraduate Electrical Engineering curriculum, which will serve as a model for future integrations across other engineering branches. The comprehensive rollout of the updated curricula is expected in 2025.”

Additionally, AICTE plans to introduce several initiatives to help colleges implement AI-focused research and development in the curricula across all engineering disciplines, according to Prof. Sitharam.

Implementation Plan

AICTE has urged institutions to submit their AI implementation plans for review. The best submissions will be showcased as benchmarks for other colleges and universities. Prof. Sitharam added, “We have recommended that colleges establish 'AI Student Chapters' under the national initiative 'AI for All: The Future Begins Here.' These student-led innovation hubs will host workshops, hackathons, and guest lectures. Colleges will receive guidelines and resources from AICTE to support the establishment of these initiatives, ensuring they align with both industry trends and ethical AI practices.
