YouTube Partners with NCERT to Launch 29 Regional Channels for Accessible Education in India
Google has entered a strategic partnership with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to enhance access to quality education across India. This collaboration is designed to empower students, teachers, and parents by providing engaging and easily accessible educational content.
YouTube and NCERT Collaborate to Make Education More Accessible
In a blog post, Jonathan Katzman, Director of Product Management for YouTube Learning, emphasized that learning has always been central to YouTube. He highlighted the importance of accessible education in India, stating that YouTube can play a pivotal role in making learning more accessible through innovative partnerships, tools, and resources.
As part of this initiative, NCERT plans to launch a series of YouTube channels over the coming months, covering grades 1 to 12. These channels will offer educational content in 29 Indian languages, including Indian Sign Language, ensuring that a broad range of learners can benefit from the content.
Google and NPTEL Introduce AI-Powered Courses on YouTube
In addition to the NCERT partnership, Google has also collaborated with the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) to offer credentialed courses on YouTube. This partnership enables learners to access a wide variety of courses, ranging from pure sciences to specialized topics like rocket propulsion and sports psychology. Katzman explained that this initiative provides a pathway for anyone outside the IIT system to take NPTEL courses on YouTube, complete certifications on the NPTEL-SWAYAM portal, and receive official certificates from IITs.
Furthermore, the collaboration incorporates AI-powered features that enhance the learning experience. Katzman noted, “Using AI, we identify the concepts presented in a video and provide definitions from the web for those concepts, covering subjects like biology, physics, and chemistry. We gather definitions and images from Google’s Knowledge Graph, relying on the video’s transcript and related metadata.”
This partnership promises to make education more accessible and inclusive, benefiting learners across India.
