UGC to Allow Flexible Degree Duration with Entry and Exit Points
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced plans to offer more flexibility in the duration of undergraduate degree courses. Starting from the next academic session, students will have the option to complete a three-year degree in two-and-a-half years and a four-year degree in three years. Additionally, the UGC will introduce provisions for multiple entry and exit points throughout the course, enabling students to either accelerate their studies or take breaks as needed.
UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar confirmed these changes during the Southern Zone Conference for Autonomous Colleges in Chennai recently. He explained that the new framework would allow students who are capable of completing their degree programs ahead of schedule to do so. “We are working towards implementing this structure from the upcoming academic session, and detailed guidelines will be issued shortly,” Kumar said.
The revised system is designed to cater to diverse student needs. While some students will be able to fast-track their studies, others who need more time will have the option to extend their courses or take breaks. This flexibility is expected to benefit students who may need to balance studies with other commitments or wish to take more time to complete their degree.
The UGC’s plan is based on recommendations from a committee led by IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti. Kumar emphasized that the initiative is aimed at offering students greater autonomy and adaptability in their education, allowing them to customize their learning journey according to their individual pace and circumstances.
The full set of guidelines detailing the new structure will be released in the near future.
