Class 6 Science Curriculum Integrates India's Scientific Heritage in New NCERT Textbook

Students in Class 6 will now explore India’s historical scientific achievements as part of their science curriculum. This new focus includes Sanskrit shlokas, the ancient measurement unit ‘Angula’ (finger breadth), Ayurveda, regional stories about star constellations, and the contributions of Indian scientists, among other topics.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a new Class 6 science textbook this year, titled Curiosity, along with textbooks for other subjects. This new textbook aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, according to NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani in the foreword.

Saklani notes, “The content seamlessly integrates concepts from physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science, along with themes like environmental education, value education, inclusive education, and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). The textbook is designed to engage learners through an integrated approach, incorporating various activities and thoughtful use of technology.”

The NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 emphasize that the school curriculum should be “rooted in the Indian and local context and ethos.” The Curiosity textbook features 12 chapters, with three chapters beginning with Sanskrit teachings on topics such as health, diversity, and alchemy. One chapter opens with a quote from Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar on water and rainfall, while another starts with a saying by 15th-century Indian mystic poet Kabir Das. Additionally, the chapter titled “Annena Jātāni Jīvanti,” from the Taittiriya Upanishad, is included as the ‘thought of the day.’
