CBSE Mandates NCERT Textbooks: Key Changes and Guidelines
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced significant revisions to its Affiliation Bye-Laws, emphasizing the mandatory use of NCERT textbooks across schools in India. The updated regulations, outlined in Chapter 2, Clause 2.4.7 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018, aim to standardize educational materials and prevent the inclusion of inappropriate content.
Updated Guidelines for Grades I to VIII
Schools are now required to adopt textbooks from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) or State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) for students in Grades I to VIII. These textbooks should align with the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF FS) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE). The CBSE underscores the importance of materials that not only reinforce core concepts but also provide discussions, analyses, examples, and practical applications.
This approach is designed to offer students a well-rounded educational experience that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills. By aligning with national curriculum frameworks, the CBSE ensures a consistent and comprehensive education system across states and schools.
Requirements for Grades IX to XII
For students in Classes IX to XII, it is compulsory for schools to use NCERT textbooks as stipulated by CBSE curriculum guidelines. In cases where NCERT or SCERT books are unavailable for certain subjects, schools are advised to refer to CBSE textbooks available on the Board's official website.
Schools are permitted to incorporate additional materials and digital resources to enhance learning, provided these resources align with NCF SE guidelines. The integration of supplementary resources is encouraged to make the educational experience more interactive and engaging.
Ensuring Content Sensitivity and Confidentiality
The revised rules emphasize the need for sensitivity regarding the content used in educational materials. Schools must exercise caution when selecting resources, digital materials, or books from publishers. All educational content should be respectful and free from material that could be deemed inappropriate or offensive based on class, community, gender, or religion. This guideline reflects CBSE's commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
Maintaining Transparency and Accountability
To ensure transparency, the CBSE mandates that schools publish the list of recommended books for each grade on their official websites. This list must be accompanied by a written statement signed by both the school Manager and Principal, confirming that they have reviewed the content and accept responsibility for it.
Schools found using inappropriate or non-compliant materials will be held accountable, and the CBSE will take necessary actions to address such issues.
These updates underscore the CBSE’s dedication to maintaining high standards of excellence in education and ensuring a uniform educational experience across the country.
