KMC Mangalore Recognized as Regional Centre of NAP-AMR by National Medical Council
ET TECH X, July 19, 2024: In a significant development for medical education and public health in India, the National Medical Council (NMC) has recognized Kasturba Medical College Mangalore (KMC Mangalore) as a Regional Centre for the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) Cell. This prestigious recognition marks a pivotal milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and elevate healthcare standards across the nation.
Under the NAP-AMR initiative, the NMC is actively establishing Resource Faculties to train prescribers across various medical colleges and institutions throughout India. KMC Mangalore has been nominated as one of these Regional Centres, playing a crucial role in implementing and disseminating the NAP-AMR module.
Each Regional Centre is tasked with establishing a dedicated "NAP-AMR Cell," comprising a minimum of four faculty members. These members include a nodal officer, appointed at the level of Professor, Additional Professor, or Associate Professor, from key departments such as Microbiology, Pharmacology, Medicine, and Community Medicine. Dr. Pooja Rao, Associate Professor of Microbiology at KMC Mangalore, has been appointed as the coordinator of the NAP-AMR Cell, overseeing its operations and initiatives.
The faculty members of the NAP-AMR Cell will undergo specialized training to become "state-level master trainers." These trainers will then play a critical role in training prescribers across the region on antimicrobial stewardship practices as part of the NAP-AMR Resource Faculty.
Commenting on this achievement, Lt. Gen. Dr. M. D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE Manipal, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of this recognition in advancing medical education and addressing global health challenges. "Being designated as a Regional Centre for NAP-AMR underscores our commitment to excellence in healthcare education. It reflects our dedication to preparing future healthcare professionals who are well-equipped to tackle the complexities of antimicrobial resistance," he stated.
Dr. Unnikrishnan, Dean of KMC Mangalore, emphasized the impact of this initiative on healthcare quality and public health. "Our faculty members, as state-level master trainers, will play a pivotal role in disseminating crucial knowledge and best practices on antimicrobial stewardship. This collaboration with the NMC is a testament to our commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through enhanced education and training," he remarked.
KMC Mangalore remains steadfast in its support of the NMC's goals under the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance. Through the establishment of the NAP-AMR Cell and the training of faculty as master trainers, KMC Mangalore aims to significantly contribute to efforts aimed at improving prescriber education and combating the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance on a national scale.
This recognition not only strengthens KMC Mangalore's position as a leader in medical education but also underscores its commitment to advancing public health initiatives in India and beyond.
