UGC introduces flexible PG programmes aligned with NEP 2020

In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced a new curriculum and credit framework for Postgraduate (PG) programmes, emphasizing student choice and flexibility.

Key Recommendations for PG Programmes

The UGC's guidelines offer various pathways for PG education based on the undergraduate qualifications of students:

Two-Year PG Programme: Students who have completed a three-year Bachelor’s programme may opt for a two-year Master’s programme, with the second year focused entirely on research.

One-Year PG Programme: Graduates of a four-year Bachelor’s programme with Honours/Honours with research can pursue a one-year Master’s programme.

Integrated Five-Year Bachelor’s/Master’s Programme: This option allows students to seamlessly progress from a Bachelor’s to a Master’s degree within a span of five years.

Emphasis on Discipline and Flexibility

Universities are encouraged to offer PG programmes in both core disciplines, such as Machine Learning, and multidisciplinary fields. The curriculum is designed to align with the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF), defining qualifications in terms of learning outcomes at levels 6, 6.5, and 7 for Master’s programmes.

Enhanced Flexibility for Students

The new framework grants students significant flexibility:

Interdisciplinary Study: Master’s students can transition between different disciplines, facilitating broader academic exploration.

Double Majors: Students who complete their undergraduate studies with a double major can choose to pursue either of their majors in their Master’s programme.

Major and Minor(s): Similarly, those with a major and minor(s) at the undergraduate level can opt to continue with their major or explore their minor(s) in greater depth during their Master’s studies.

Adapting to Modern Learning Modes

Recognizing the diversity of student needs and preferences, the UGC supports alternative modes of learning such as offline, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), online learning, and hybrid modes. This approach allows students to tailor their educational experience according to their circumstances and learning style.

In conclusion, the UGC's initiative to reform PG education in accordance with the NEP 2020 marks a significant step towards enhancing student-centered learning and flexibility in higher education. By offering diverse pathways and promoting interdisciplinary studies, these reforms aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields while adapting to evolving educational paradigms. As universities implement these guidelines, students can look forward to a more personalized and enriching PG education experience that prepares them for future challenges and opportunities in their careers.
