The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently taken action to remove Sangai International University, located in Churachandpur, Manipur, from its list of recognized universities. This decision comes after the higher education regulator found that the university is unable to offer UGC-specified degrees at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and doctoral (PhD) levels.
In an official statement, the UGC advised prospective students against enrolling in any programs offered by Sangai International University, emphasizing that degrees issued by the university will not be recognized or considered valid for higher education or employment purposes.
Sangai International University, established by the Manipur government as a state private university, had been included in the UGC's list of recognized universities in June 2015. However, the recent decision to remove it from the list follows a failure to meet the UGC's standards and requirements.
According to the UGC, Sangai International University was repeatedly requested to provide necessary information for inspection through official correspondence. Despite these requests, the university failed to submit the required information.
Subsequently, the UGC issued a Show Cause Notice dated December 19, 2023, giving Sangai International University an opportunity to explain why action should not be taken to remove its name from the list of recognized universities. However, the university did not respond adequately to the notice.
Furthermore, the UGC sent a notice to Manipur's department of higher education, urging immediate action and requesting comments on the matter. Unfortunately, the UGC has not received any response from either the university or the government department.
In light of these circumstances, the UGC has taken the necessary steps to remove Sangai International University from its list of recognized universities. This decision underscores the importance of upholding quality standards in higher education and ensuring that institutions comply with regulatory requirements for the benefit of students and the academic community.
