The University Grants Commission has published a list of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) approved to provide online and open and distance learning (ODL) programmes. The University Grants Commission (UGC) previously requested online applications from eligible Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) under Regulation 3(A) and Regulation 3(B)(b) of UGC (open and distance learning programmes and online programmes) regulations, 2020 and its amendments for programme recognition under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.
Students can view a detailed list of universities offering various online learning courses on the official UGC-DEB web portal — deb.ugc.ac.in/Search/Course. UGC has sanctioned nearly 80 universities to offer multiple online distance learning programmes. The deadline for admission to ODL and online programmes for the February 2024 academic session is March 31, 2024. Institutes have until April 15 to upload student admission details on the UGC-DEB web portal.
UGC has also provided guidelines for students to follow while applying to any institute for online distance learning programmes. “Students should verify the recognition status of HEI for offering ODL and Online education for the session opted for admission on UGC DEB website, check the details on the HEIs’ website, take note of prohibited programmes and prohibition of franchising arrangement and ensure that all activities are being conducted within Territorial Jurisdiction for ODL Programmes,” UGC’s official notice stated.
The UGC’s release of the list of universities offering online courses heralds a new era of inclusive and accessible education, empowering learners to pursue their academic and professional aspirations irrespective of constraints. With technology as an enabler, online education has the transformative potential to democratize learning and foster a knowledge-driven society that thrives on innovation and excellence.
